If you use Firefox (99% chances) then you must already have heard about Weave as I mentioned in one of my earlier posts. It's a wonder tool that lets you keep your bookmarks, tabs, history and other profile data in synch. Weave grew to popularity pretty high. So much so that they exceeded the server quota and had to close registrations. It had all been fine till then. Lately many users have reported failed logins and ever deleted user IDs (as it was in my case). Posts in forums are piling up and I thought of an alternative.
One great thing about weave is that you don't need to store the synch data on the Mozilla servers only. You can store it on other (supported) server as well. I thought I'd give it a try and setup an alternate server for Weave users - something that we could scale as time goes by. I even bought a hosting account that supported the technology. Weave needs a WebDAV share to synchronise with. Not everyone offers it but some do. But Weave still would not sign-in. Finally some helpful people at irc #labs pointed out some some existing bugs and Weave would not synch with every WebDAV server. After having invested money, time and almost having pulled my hair I have started on setting my own LAMP server with WebDAV. If all goes fine I may get some dedicated hosting to start a Weave alternate server. Would you like to have a dedicated server exclusively for Weave? Drop a line here.
So what do you do meanwhile? There's another server which you can use (you'll have to start from scratch - your existing username, password etc won't work). Go to myDisk.se and create an account. Go into Weave preferences into the advanced tab and set the server location to http://mydisk.se/yourusername. "yourusername" being the username that you signed-up at myDisk with. Rest hopefully will work like a charm. Put in your username and password in the respective boxes, choose a passphrase (this is required to encrypt your data so no one can steal or access it on the server). Sign-in and leave a comment here about how it went.

Wow, thanks for this… worked like a charm!
Hmmm… double-checked, did not work for me. I wonder what I missed.
Disappointed, you haven't provided any information about what is not working. Are you getting an error message? Are you not able to login?
The username and password were verified, and when I look at the Weave preferences I find "logged in". However, upon entering a passphrase and signing in, I get "Invalid username or password".
Weave preferences UI is still bugged. It does show logged in when you are not. Verify that you can login to mydisk.se by browsing to https://mydisk.se and entering your username and password.
next verify the url in weave preferences - should be like https://mydisk.se/disappointed/ (if your username is disappointed - mark the trailing slash). Ok out of the preferences so that this URL gets saved. Then try to sign in. If it doesn't work login to mydisk via the web interface and delete the directory named user and everything inside it to start afresh.
Thanks for your help, but no go.
don't work for me too
i can login on mydisk website, but weave tells me "invalid username and/or password"
tried to delete all directories and remake them but still no luck
Seems to work nicely for me.
I had a problem with the previous server as it kept restoring my bookmarks to their original state which was on my old computer even though I would make changes on my new laptop.
But this new server seems to work just fine. Let's keep using it and see.
Looks like it worked like a charm for me… which is fantastic because Weave hasn't worked for me in over ten days on the Mozilla servers.
One question, though… as we're logging on via HTTP, versus HTTPS (as with Mozilla's servers), does this mean that our logon name and password are sent unencrypted? I'm assuming our data remains encrypted, but this still seems an unneccessary risk if it can be avoided.
