Tivoization: On a quick short note

What good is a blog withour a tinge of personal touch? I’ve been occupied with my work on music. But while releasing ColorfulTabs today, I had AMO force me to provide a license. Well Creative Commons it was but I did take a look at GPL and came across a word “Tivoization” which means “… is the creation of a system that incorporates software under the terms of a copyleft software license, but uses hardware to prevent users from running modified versions of the software on that hardware”. Discovery of the day…

That’s an analogous abuse of Patent: government protection for ideas released to the public for a LIMITED span of time.

Extensions ought not be developed with a (near) primary goal of profit. That’s not the point of the mozilla community.

HOPE that other deveopers will admire your innovation, use bits of your code, and give you credit in source and end user PR.

It IS win win.

Tivo: pay for the hardware AND pay for the software (vapor) that powers it or the unit becomes an expensive doorstop. Wha?? enter MOXI and the quickly evolving PVR communities.

Grats on your ColorfulTabs . I hope you will add features to integrate with TabKit for finer grain color control and preferably fading tabs over time from disuse.
