Safely Upgrading To Firefox 3.1 Beta2

January 28, 2009

Firefox 3.1 is just around the corner. With Firefox 3.1 beta 2 doing the rounds these days, there are a lot of users who are willing to upgrade but are waiting because they do not want their extensions and themes to be disabled due to compatibility issues or just profile problems.

Before you upgrade make sure you backup your current profile. The simplest way to back up your profile is to quit all instances of Firefox and just zip the entire profile using an archiving utility.

  • Find the location of your Firefox-profile, create a zip archive of the profile and move the archive to a safe location.
  • Now download and install Firefox 3.1 beta 2.
  • Type about:config in the address bar and you will get a list of preferences (if you get a warning you’ll have to agree to it).
  • Create a new boolean preference named extensions.checkCompatibility and set its value to false.
  • Restart Firefox and now any extensions which might have been disabled due to compatibility issues will be enabled.

Use these extensions cautiously and if you come across any issues try disabling them to to see if it resolves the problem. In any case if anything goes wrong you can roll back to the previous version of Firefox and restore the profile to the original location by unzipping it.

According to https://wiki.mozilla.org/Releases/Firefox_3.1b3, there would be a new beta of Firefox 3.1 in a few days. Supposedly, the string code is freezed and there will be some new patchs. So, instead of install Beta 2 i will suggest wait some days and install the Beta 3. (What i read is that Hotmail problem is fixed)
