You are using an antivirus already but want to make sure if it is really effective. We’ll worry not here’s a quick test to check whether your antivirus can detect what it’s supposed to detect. And you can do so without downloading any stuff or jeopardising your computer. Open up Notepad or another plain text editor (not Word or similar) and paste the following string and save it to your desktop:
X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
Your anti-virus should detect the file as a EICAR test file or similar. If not, update your anti-virus and try again or change your anti-virus.
The above string has been taken from the EICAR test file page where you can read the details about it.

My free AVG does not detect this as a potential virus, does this mean AVG is crap?
If you saved that text in a plain-text file (with a .txt file-extension) and if your anti-virus didn’t detect it, you should check whether your anti-virus is enabled, functional and updated with the latest definitions. If not try a different anti-virus.
Our anti-virus was successfully able to detect this file.
i guess its wrong script! bitdefender and nod32 didnt detect it
even if you save it as All file extension it wont work
it really works….as soon as i try to save it on pc …my mcafee pops up dumping the file into quarantine folder. The EICAR test file for malware is also awesome. It shows how powerful is your antivirus against malwares…
Relieved my Mcafee works great
It works great with my BitDefender Total Security 2011
Thanks
Comodo found it straight away and dumped it
save as .bat :p :p text.bat
