Google Introduces Expandable Ads To US Publishers

March 5, 2009

Google has announced expandable ads for the US publishers. The ads will display at random and will show up if you’ve enabled image ads for that particular unit. The expandable ads will expand when user interacts with them and will not expand beyond double its width and height. These ads will show up in a layer so that upon expansion the contents of the website are not shifted. The ads can be again closed by the user any time.

The introduction of expandable ads has left me with an impression that Google is willing to let the site visitors experiment and interact with their ads to a high degree while not paying for all this interaction to the publishers. So for all the hosting and the real-estate that these ads consume, the publisher only gets paid when these ads are clicked or upon impressions (ppm). More about this at the Official Adsense Blog – Inside Adsense.
