Google Analytics is pretty much de facto for tracking visitor-stats. One of the most useful features of Google Analytics is its “Advanced Segmentation”. It allows you to isolate and analyze subsets of your traffic. By default, the Google Analytics graph shows up all the visits without any further segmentation. Of this entire traffic a part of it comes from direct visitors who come to your site by typing the URL of your site into their browser’s address-bar; a section comes from other websites by following links to your website. And a major part comes through the search engine results when they type in a search query and your website shows up in the results.
If you want to have a glimpse of traffic coming from various sources (direct, referrals, search engine) and plot a contrasting graph of all the trend lines, you can use Google Analytics Advanced Segments which are only a quick click away from the dashboard. Just follow the steps below:
- Click the Advanced Segments button on the top right corner of the dashboard.

- Here you can see all the segments that you can use to segment your visitor / traffic sources. Just check the ones you want and click Apply.
- Voila! The traffic graph plots all this information segmented by the traffic sources.

So next time you see a sudden increase or decrease in the traffic, you know where to look and how to find who sent it.
