On further investigation, it appears that tab text is fine when either ColorfulTabs or Personas is disabled. Also, some personas work perfectly fine at the same time as ColorfulTabs, and some do not. As I'm rather attached to both addons, I can live with a bit of a blur and change personas if it gets to me. The activated tab is always fine, but the others are a bit harder to read. It looks like there's a shadow on the text. The behavior goes away completely when ColorfulTabs is disabled.
