The new version (3.9.5) released today fails to download from mozilla.org, resulting in an update install failure, probably because the new version is 3.9.5 and it is trying to download 3.9.6.

    The actual error message is:

Firefox could not install the file at

    http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/addons/1368/colorfultabs-3.9.6-fx.xpi

    because: Download error -228

The release takes some time to propagate across all the mirrors. It will be available in an hour or so.

And mine is trying to download 3.9.7

So what's the new version, and why the differences?

It's unfortunate that we are seeing this issue over the weekend. Something is wrong on the server side and most of the Mozilla team is away on the weekend.

A temporary fix is to download and install the new version manually from here.

A bug has been created and is being tracked at Addon is repeatedly being deleted from the servers.

Please join in and introduce your suggestions/feedback on the issue.

I sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and assure you that I'm doing everything on my part to get this issue resolved and things up and running.

So as it is, this brings up a larger issue of developing, updating, hosting of ColorfulTabs. As you know currently it is released on Addons.Mozilla.Org. This introduces a new level of complexity as we rely on a third-party to host our addon. This brings up several questions:

    1. Should ColorfulTabs be hosted on our own site?
    2. Will it see the same reach and visibility as it has on Addons.Mozilla.Org?
    3. Should ColorfulTabs be a paid (reasonably priced) software given that such a lot of development, maintenance and more goes into it?

I downloaded the XPI file and it installed fine. Thanks!

For those that have not used an XPI file before:
After downloading it, open Firefox and select File > Open File
Navigate to where you downloaded the file, select it and click the Open button.
The typical installation window will open, select Install.
    Restart Firefox.

    Hi Shivanand.

My answers for your question are:
1 and 2. You could host in your site only the last stable version, but the problem with AMO is just temporal... nothing to worry about... (i think so)

    3. I know that develop and maintain anything is (in most cases) a great task. You can charge it with a low price ($1 or €1, e.g.) but, in my case, i don't like to pay anything through web sites. And i don't know if users would prefer to pay for it beside the fact of remove CT, because if you start to charge CT, then (probably) another addon developer will make his own version of CT (with another name, surely).
Sorry to say this, but i think its the truth...

I downloaded the xpi file and it installed for me as well.

I'd find another host other than just the one you're using now to deploy the newest version -- perhaps a link from the blog if nothing else. That's where I went first to get information before finding this forum.

As for paying -- I don't usually install something I have to pay for. I know it's tough and time consuming to develop these things, but I think Jorge_Luis is right.
