Gremlin, maybe?

I have had the most interesting time with ColorfulTabs. It works, and then stops working, seemingly at random. It didn't work the first time I installed it, then, after a month or so of Firefox restarts (this was back in version 2) suddenly it worked. It just so happened that it was the night that the computer does its scheduled check for Windows updates, so Firefox was restarted, and, you guessed it, ColorfulTabs didn't work again.
I updated to Firefox 3 (no CT showing), then, tonight after uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox, Java and Shockwave (quite the night for programs not working) it worked again! I set a restore point quickly so I could get it back, but, sadly, that did not work either, so when I restarted to activate CT (following the add-on instruction to restart Firefox), gone again.
I followed the forum suggestion to use Nightly Testor Tools, but then couldn't find an earlier version of CT anywhere. NTT didn't ask me to force CT when I reinstalled, so I guess there is no conflict?
I really love this little add-on, and I admire Shivanand Sharma for not being more harsh with people who criticize this gem without understanding how hard he worked on it, and that it is, after all, FREE.
So. Down to my question. Can anybody help me understand what's going on?
I am running (gag) Windows Vista, Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.0.2) Gecko/2008091620 Firefox/3.0.2 and CT v 3.4 is the one I installed, again, tonight.
Thanks! -
Hi DragonLady,
Would you like to post which theme and other extensions you are using?
A good way to star troubleshooting is to create a new firefox profile and then install colorfultabs. See if that works. -
A THOUSAND apologies. I read that in the forum. I can only plead extreme fatigue and strong urges to bash the computer with something hard.
I have the Blue Cats theme installed, and the add-ons are:
AVG Safe Search 8.0
AVG Security Toolbar 2.0.2.0080718
ColorfulTabs 3.4
Duplicate Tab 1.0.2 (I hardly even remember that I have this option, and don't use it. Probably should remove it)
My Points Toolbar 1.0.12 (now that I have NTT I might be able to use this!)
NTT v 2.0.2
Real Player Browser Record Plugin 1.0 (something my son thought I should have. Never use, that I know of)
and my favorite, Sxipper 2.2
As to creating a Firefox profile, I must go read up on that as I am not really sure if I know what that is or how to do it. Sorry. Really a newbie on Firefox. Learning as fast as I can . . . *paddling*
Thanks for the gentle rebuke. You must get so tired of saying that!
-
not really until one is not willing to learn. To launch firefox with the profile manager start firefox with the "-p" parameter. Like so including quotes (make sure the directory is correct)
"c:\program files\mozilla firefox 3\firefox.exe" -p
You'll have a button to create a new profile and then once you start Firefox in the new profile you can install colorfultabs into it. But I doubt the theme you are using. Can't be sure. -
missed the
there... -
So, just to prove I'm a total newbie at this, I close firefox, go to the run command under start, and type in the command as shown? Will the "create a profile" page have LOTS of instructions? Should I have all that extensions and add-ons stuff available?
You truly are wonderfully patient!
-
Okay I just checked my directory, and the command line will look like this:
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\Firefox.exe
Does that mean I don't have Firefox 3? I am SURE I downloaded and installed it . . I think . . .
-
no clue. But here's how I do it.
First of all close all instances of Firefox.
a) Click the "Start" button
b) Click "Run"
c) type "cmd" to bring up the command prompt
d) On the command prompt C:\Documents and Settings\sharmas> "c:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe
" -p
By the way there's something that may make your job easier... haven't tested on Firefox 3. See http://www.binaryturf.com/?page_id=7
I was in the tech support of in an Indian call center. I pass most of the times when people think they are testing my patience

by default Firefox 3 installs into "Mozilla Firefox 3" directory unlike older ones which installed in "Mozilla Firefox". So the complete location will be
c:\program files\mozilla firefox 3\firefox.exe
and not
c:\program files\mozilla firefox\firefox.exe -
that said, if you chose to install into c:\program files\mozilla firefox, then Firefox wil lbe there. You can go into
My Computer
Local Disk (C:)
Program files (type it in the location bar if you can't see it)
Mozilla Firefox or Mozilla Firefox 3
You'll be able to see it in one of these locations.
