Firefox — Enable Smart Tab Previews To Locate Tabs On-The-Fly

firefox all tab previews

Upon opening multiple tabs, you can easily navigate through tabs on the browser window by “Ctrl+Tab”. While doing so, you have to go through various web pages to reach your destination tab. Or you can also simply navigate and switch to the required tab by enabling the tab previews. Here is a neat trick to enable tab previews:

  1. Preview Tabs In Order Of Recency/Focus: If you want to preview the tabs opened in your browser window in the order of recent usage, type about:config in the location bar and hit enter. Type “browser.ctrlTab.previews” in the filter bar at the top. Double-click it to set its value to “True”. It enables tab previews as you navigate with “Ctrl+Tab” and also gives the option to showcase all the tabs.
  2. Preview All The Tabs At A Glace: If you want to preview all the tabs at once, locate and set the value of “browser.allTabs.previews” to “True” as in previous step. Then, press the key combination “Ctrl+Shift+Tab” to preview all the opened tabs at once. You can even search for the required tab through search box above as well. This also changes the All Tabs drop-down list on the right end of the tab-bar to the tab-preview icon to indicate that tab-previews are On.

Both these settings don’t require you to restart Firefox and have been tested in Firefox 3.6.*. Ctrl+Tab Or Ctrl+Shift+Tab; now how smart is that!

What I accidentally discovered last week, which confused me all weekend, is that if you have Aol’s Webmail opened in a tab and then use the keystroke combination Cntl-Shft-Tab, the Preview All Tabs will appear disregarding the setting in “about:config” which was set to FALSE.
I just emailed Mozilla tech support about this. Had I not type those keystrokes while using Aol Webmail, I would have never discovered the Preview Tabs feature in FireFox, because my settings were FALSE. I do like the feature now that it’s known to me. I’m using FireFox 3.6.12 with all plugins disabled.
