Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 released

Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 has been released. This beta as usual is intended for public testing by developers and for collecting the feedback from the user-base. Firefox 3.1 beta 2 flaunts several features. It is based on the Gecko 1.9.1 rendering engine which had been in development for several months. It also has a Private Browsing Mode which allows you to browse in a mode where none of the browsing data is left over – good if you share your Firefox profile at your home computer or at a kiosk. As a side-note it’s worth mentioning that the private browsing mode is also known as “porn mode” – puts things into perspective. A complete list of details is available at the release notes.

Firefox 3.1 beta 3 is expected to be released sometime in February 2009. If you enjoy taking the risk of upgrading to the beta then this release is for you to download and install. I’d certainly like to participate in beta testing to check out the new features and develop my extensions. But for a production environment it would be a good choice to stay safe with Firefox 3.0.4.

I worth to mention that (at least) Hotmail isn’t working with Firefox 3.1b, because a compatibility issue between Gecko and the new Hotmail skin. And it’s a mess to switch to IE only for read my emails.

I’m sure it’ll be fixed by the time the RC comes out.

Reinstalling Firefox also reminded me of a feature in the forthcoming Firefox 3.1 that I was happy to leave behind: tab-switching behavior. I’m a big fan of keyboard shortcuts, and use Ctrl-Tab hundreds of times daily to switch between browser tabs. I loathe the new Firefox mechanism, which switches to your most recently used tab rather than cycling one tab to the right, and showing a miniature preview version of the Web page instead of actually switching tabs. I don’t know if others’ brains work differently, but the new mechanism leaves me completely lost in a sea of tabs, forcing me to use the mouse, which slows me down.

So far so good…it does seem to me that it is faster and I haven’t encountered any compatibility issues yet!! Thanks for the great articles.
