FfChrome 1.7 Beta — Firefox Or Google Chrome?

March 7, 2009

After spending several nights working on FfChrome I ended up with two things – sore eyes and an extension which would transform Firefox into Google Chrome on the fly. Reach out from the context menu and “Toggle Chrome Mode” and splash – Firefox transforms into a wonderful slick browser with an inviting interface.

When I saw Matt Mullenweg fire up Google Chrome to begin his presentation at Wordcamp India, it left me thinking why was the creator of WordPress using Google Chrome. One thing came to my mind – it’s slick interface. And why couldn’t Firefox match up? Well it most certainly can and has. I present to you FfChrome 1.7 beta. This now not only does trim your context menus, it allows you to transform your browser into a Google Chrome equivalent interface on the fly and back again. Check out this image.

Now I’m eager to offer it to you and I’m sure you’d want to try it out. But remember this.

Newbie alert: This is a beta version. If something goes wrong you must disable this extension.

I’ve only tested this on Firefox 3.1b2. So without much adieu here’s the xpi. Srop me your suggestions and requests. If you need immediate help head over to the forum.

Nice extension
I previously heard that a theme was available to look as Chrome :)

Shivanand Sharma March 8, 2009 at 3:56 pm

See that titlebar-less window? No theme can do it. And of course it goes without saying that the theme won’t transform and rearrange your buttons into a single toolbar, that too on-the-fly… :)

I am trying this out now. I actually like it. I love Chrome but missed my autofill…lol
Thanks!!!

Chromifox Extreme does a better job of looking like chrome.

Any I made this to hide the titlebar.

Good work Jon. FfChrome is a blend of both things in a single addon with dynamic workflow.

Hi, I’m using you extension in the 1.6 version for Linux. Why the next version is just for windows? :S

Anyway, I just have a little feature request: I’d like that when the user moves the focus on the context menu with the keyboard arrows, “Show All” should expand when the arrow get’s over it (or when the arrow tries to go further down. Instead of the alert you are using.

Thanks for the extension, hope this can be done for us keyboard users :P

Would it be possible to move that toggle menu item into the tools menu, or perhaps just leave it in the extension config, or at least give me an option to disable it.
I’m still using 1.6 just for that very reason.

Still loving the extension though. Keep up the good work. :)

The only gripe I have so far is that there is no minimize, maximise or exit buttons at the top left. But I love it, it gives more space for surfing. Keep up the good work.

Ignore the above post, I can’t tell my left from my right. It’s really funny when someone stops me for directions and after they go I start to think where the hell did I send them!

Nice extra feature, I was wondering what that colorful icon in my menu was from. It’s a cool add-on, It only needs the min, max, and exit buttons to make it a common used feature for firefox.

The only compelling reason one would have to switch from Firefox to Chrome, is the fact that chrome is far more secure and is build better under the hood. The idea of having each tab utilize it’s own process is amazing innovative, and their rebuilding of the java VM is nothing sort of amazing. Chrome is, from a techie standpoint a far superior browser. It is more secure and more efficient. If chrome is able to catch up to Firefox in terms of customization, which is currently where Firefox shines, it will by far surpass it.

Waiting for the stable version of this

Consider instead of creepy-google-build of Chromium: Iron. It’s privacy minded AND beat google to integration of adblock.

Iron Chromium is lightweight but we cannot make a comparison except to naked Firefox plus only AdBlock Plus. Google looks to beat Mozilla at an middle bit between the browser and the extensions to mitigate compatibility — a matter oft raised at mozillazine and bug discussions.

Fortunately google has ‘pledged’ to keep the extension format open so end users can inspect- and modify to their respective heart’s content :-)

I prefer Firefox.

The content is very good & non-bias

Seth Wisely July 5, 2009 at 9:20 am

The Chromium builds will hit their first performance choke point when one can install a plethora of extensions — as in firefox. Hopefully there will be mitigating code to avoid the “competition” between extensions that exists in firefox.
