Criticism II - How to handle it

Criticized, low on morale and demotivated? Read this -

It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; because there is not effort without error and shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly. So that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.

  • Criticism is a sign of growing popularity. It simply means you have polarized people. While you may want to notice only the ones on the positive side, there does exist a negative side. The point is that people are listening, you matter and that you have influenced them.
  • Don’t take it personally. Out there on the internet everyone is a familiar stranger. There are no faces only gravatars. There are no handshakes and smiles but only smilies. People can’t express and don’t care to. If criticism sounds insulting or rude it wasn’t the intention. It is the very nature of criticism.
  • Establish limits. Sometimes things are under your influence. You have the liberty to delete comments on your site. But that’s not how it should work. Formulate policies and ask commenters to adhere to them. Don’t allow vulgar or abusive words. And take action on comments which do not abide by the policy.
  • The above three points will help you filter and process criticism into useful information and communication. They are no more biting words, they are the feedback from the user community. Use them to answer user concerns and make the most of it.
