Colorful Gmail — Google Themes Up Gmail

November 20, 2008

Gmail now comes with themes. When I loaded up gmail this morning, it prompted me if I wanted to use a theme. Under Gmail settings there’s a new tab called themes. From there you can select which theme you’d like to use for Gmail.

It’s been a long time people have been using third-party scripts to enhance gmail’s functionality and looks. This development takes care of the looks and they are pretty impressive. You can read more about Gmail themes at Google Help Center. Some of these themes have been created by artists. Pep up your Gmail with your favourite colors.

The new themes are, shall we say, interesting.

I know there are some bugs to be worked out, and already there are numerous threads unraveling in the Google Groups. There seems to be some very annoying things that happen.

I use right-hand labels (a lab item) and am quite happy. When I use a new theme, however, when I open a msg, the mail is in a long-narrow box down the middle of the screen. And sometimes, when I open the labels list, this covers up the right part of the mail which contains things like “print all.” Even the little “Reply” box is obscured.

An most surprising as well — I get a horizontal scroll bar since all the things don’t seem to fit the page.

I don’t believe I am doing anything wrong, and would like to hear any similar reactions.

Remember when they changed the tabs in iGoogle?

I totally agree. I believe things will take a little time to mature. Hopefully Google is already on it.
